A bucket, a patch of shade, and a bay with room to slow down. Finding a Menorca beach that works for the whole family.
A family beach day has its own measure of success. Sometimes it is the first delighted step into shallow water. Sometimes it is everyone eating lunch before anyone becomes too hungry, or finding a spot where the bags can stay put for an hour. The extraordinary view helps, of course. But the small comforts are often what turn a beautiful beach into a happy afternoon.
Menorca offers plenty of different versions of that afternoon. There are village bays where lunch is close, resort beaches with useful services, and long stretches of sand where the horizon gives everyone a little breathing room. Start with the age and energy of your group. The beach that makes sense with a toddler and a pushchair may be a different one from the beach that keeps older children happily exploring.
Choose an easy beginning
Es Grau makes a gentle opening chapter: a shallow village bay with the natural park nearby, and somewhere beyond the towel to wander when the attention span changes. Cala Galdana adds the scale and services of a resort around a sheltered-shaped bay. Both invite a day with options, where a snack, a pause or a change of scene can be part of the pleasure rather than a complicated expedition.
Easy means different things to different families. A short walk on paper may still include steps, rough ground or a steep return. Check the access details before you load the car, and verify what is open in the season of your visit. Toilets, shade and somewhere to buy water deserve a place on the wish list alongside the colour of the sea. Plan around the person who will find the journey hardest.

Let the beach set a gentler pace
At Son Bou, the sweep of sand is part of the appeal. You can choose how far to walk from the resort end, keeping the return manageable and respecting the dunes behind the beach. Arenal d’en Castell offers a different feeling again: a curved bay on the north coast with resort comforts close. Son Xoriguer keeps the scale smaller near Ciutadella, with food options around the resort when it is time to regroup.
You do not need to fill every hour. Let there be time for a sandcastle that never quite gets finished, for finding the same shell three times, for sitting under shade while the loudest part of the day passes. Build in water, snacks and a proper pause. The best family itinerary often contains one main beach and enough flexibility to leave while everyone still has a little energy for the walk back.

Five places to find your family’s beach rhythm
Es Grau
Shallow village bay with nearby food; combine it with the natural park rather than a long coastal trek.
A shallow, sheltered bay in front of the fishing village of Es Grau, at the edge of S’Albufera des Grau natural park. Very calm water makes it ideal for children and paddling.
Maó · North coast · ~1 min walk · Seasonal bus line 23

Resort services around an enclosed bay; the main practical constraint is busy parking.
A horseshoe bay at the mouth of the Algendar gorge, ringed by hotels but still striking. Calm, shallow and fully serviced, it is a good base for walks to the wilder coves either side.
Ferreries · South coast · ~6 min walk · Resort bus routes

Long sandy beach with services at the eastern end; open water can be rough in southerly winds.
Menorca’s longest beach, a wide strand of more than two kilometres backed by dunes and the Son Bou wetland, with a resort at its eastern end.

Check today’s wind, waves and beach flags before swimming, even at a bay known for shallow water. A family-friendly label describes the setting, not today’s safety. Stay close to children at the water’s edge and pay attention to local instructions. Pack drinking water and sun protection even when the beach has services, and think about how you will create shade without depending on finding a particular patch of it.
The memory may be the big blue bay, or it may be the smaller scene: sandy feet on the way to lunch, a towel wrapped around sleepy shoulders, the serious business of carrying a carefully chosen pebble. Give those moments room. A beach that fits your family is already a very good place to be.
